Hundreds of people have transformed a public square in Brussels into a huge tribute to the victims of today's bombings.

The ground outside the Brussels Stock Exchange has been covered with tributes written in chalk to those caught up in the attacks.

Flowers and candles were also laid in the square, which is just over a mile from the Maalbeek metro station where at least 20 people were killed when a bomb went off.

That explosion came shortly after two blasts at Brussels airport claimed at least 14 lives.

The square outside the grand stock exchange building became a major gathering place for people reeling from the devastating attacks.

As well as paying tribute to the victims, many traced hopeful and defiant messages on the tarmac.

"Brussels Forever", "Long live peace" and "#PrayForBelgium" were among the words left on the ground.
