Britney Spears has opened up on life post-conservatorship, saying she is “grateful for each day”.

The 39-year-old singer posted a statement to her millions of followers detailing her new freedom after a Los Angeles judge terminated the controversial 13-year legal arrangement last week.

She said that she “might as well do a hint of my thoughts...before I go and set things square on @Oprah”, hinting to fans that she will give a tell-all interview with the talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

In the video, Ms Spears said she was excited to be able to do things like have a debit card and car keys, as well as thanking her fans for their support.

She said: “I’ve been in the conservatorship for 13 years. It’s a really a long time to be in a situation you don’t want to be in,” she said in a video posted to social media.

“So I’m just grateful for each day and being able to have the keys to my car, to be able to be independent and feel like a woman. Owning an ATM card, seeing cash for the first time … It’s the little things.”

She also thanked the fan-led #FreeBritney movement for raising public awareness of her situation that saw her financial and personal life overseen by her father and attorneys.

Expressing her gratitude, she said: “You guys rock.

My voice was muted and threatened for so long and I wasn’t able to speak up and say anything … you guys saved my life, 100 per cent.”

The singer also said that she hopes that the media attention on her case will lead to reforms in the conservatorship system.

“I’m here to be an advocate for people with real disabilities and illnesses.

“Hopefully my story will make an impact and make some changes in the corrupt system.”

Ms Spears also wrote in the caption of her Instagram post that what the conservatorship did to her was “demoralizing and degrading.”

She said, “ I’m not even mentioning all the bad things they did to me which they should all be in jail for”.

Ms Spears alleges abuse by her father, Jamie Spears, and “church going mother” Lynne Spears who she also blames for putting her under the conservatorship

Her statement comes after a decision on Friday by a Los Angeles judge marked an extraordinary victory for the singer who had fought for years to regain her independence.

She was placed under the conservatorship in 2008, which took away her rights to make basic decisions about her finances, career and personal life.

The conservatorship had long outraged the singer’s millions of fans, but pressure to terminate it had ratcheted up over the last 12 months as the singer brought her grievances into the public eye.

Over the summer she delivered bombshell courtroom testimony alleging the arrangement – which is usually reserved for the very ill or old – was abusive and deprived her of basic human rights such as getting married and having more children.

On hearing the news that she had won her court battle, Ms Spears hailed it the “best day ever”.
