Britney Spears’ attorney has requested that a new conservator be selected to manage the pop star’s finances after recent testimony where she revealed she wanted her father removed from the role.
According to the New York Times, lawyer Matthew Rosengart asked that accountant Jason Rubin be named the conservator of the 39-year-old’s estate, a role currently occupied by her father, Jamie Spears.
The newspaper said that Mr Rosengart also filed a petition to remove Jamie as a conservator but that document was not made public.
Mr Rosengart was hired as her new lawyer, replacing Samuel Ingham, the man appointed by the court to represent Ms Spears, but whom she criticised last month for not doing enough to help her end the arrangement.
Speaking in court earlier this month, Mr Rosengart called on Jamie Spears to step down as conservator.
“There’s a real question as to why Mr Spears does not voluntarily step aside today. Today. Does anybody really believe that Mr Spears’s involvement in the case is in the best interest of Ms Spears?”
It comes after the singer told the court she wanted her father promptly removed and charged with conservatorship abuse.
A tearful Ms Spears addressed the court for a second time last month, where she listed a series of grievances against the conservatorship, alleging her hair vitamins and coffee had been taken from her.
“Mam, that’s not abuse, that’s just f****** cruelty,” she told Judge Brenda Penny.
“Excuse my language but it’s the truth.”
She has also said she will not perform again while her father retains control of her career. “I’m not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think,” the musician wrote on Instagram.
Ms Spears’ finances and personal affairs have been controlled by the conservatorship since 2008. Her father has largely overseen her life and career since, though Ms Spears has been trying to oust him from the role.
The #FreeBritney movement has called for the conservatorship to be terminated.
