British man drowns 'after suffering cramp in foot' while swimming in Austrian lake

A British man has drowned in Austria after suffering a cramp in his foot while swimming in a lake, police have said.

Officers said the 33-year-old did not resurface after going underwater in the Schwarzindien beach area on Wednesday.

The man was with a woman, 36, also from England, when he complained of cramp, police said.

She screamed for help and other bathers tried to help.

State police said: "When he did not come back to the surface of the water, she screamed for help."

The man's body was recovered from the water at the location, 20 miles east of Salzburg, at around 4.30pm local time, officers said.
