A British football fan is in hospital in Bratislava after being stabbed by thugs following England’s World Cup qualifier.

Craig Rosie was knifed in the chest and stomach after he was set upon outside a pub in the city’s main square on Saturday night after England's 1-0 win over Slovakia.

He was rushed to hospital where he is now recovering – 900 miles away from his family in Gloucester.

Mr Rosie’s wife Danielle is campaigning to get her husband home safely.

She told Gloucestershire live that the Mr Rosie’s daughter Kirsty, 19, and the couple’s two sons Callum, 13, and nine-year-old Thomas were “worried and scared”.

She added: “The Slovakian fans started fighting with them.

“The next thing one of Craig's friends said his top was ripped and he was bleeding then realised he had been stabbed, Craig felt nothing I think it was due to shock.

"You cannot even imagine how worried and scared we all are, we are 900 miles apart and there is nothing we can do. We just want Craig home safe."

The 42-year-old Bristol Rovers and Gloucester City fan is unable to travel home over doctor’s fears that pressure in an aeroplane would damage his lungs.

Friend Craig Broderick has set up a fundraising appeal in a bid to reunite Mr Rosie with his family.

He wrote on Facebook that pals were looking for “other ways to get him home”.

“He's currently still in hospital in Bratislava but has been told he can't fly home until at least Friday and because of the nature of his injury - basically a stab wound through the chest - even that may not yet be possible so we're looking for other ways to get him home which would mean couple of the lads flying back out then either helping to get back via train or hire car.

“Looking to get a whip round going so any contributions will be greatly appreciated so we can get this lad home back to his family safe and sound,” he said.

Four Brits and two Slovak citizens were arrested and taken to a police station following the violent clashes between fans.

A police spokesman told the Sun:"During this conflict an English citizen suffered a stab wound in his abdomen and he was transported to a hospital."
