A two-year-old boy has died after he was stuck in a narrow well for more than four days.

Fatehveer Singh fell into the 125-foot deep well outside his family’s home in in Sangrur district in Punjab, India, last Thursday.

Despite a 110 hour rescue mission, he had died by the time authorities managed to reach him by digging a parallel well.

The disused well was just nine inches wide, complicating efforts to save him.

The toddler had oxygen supplies while he was stuck but no food or water, and was pronounced dead at hospital in Chandigarh.

The boy’s death prompted protests about the time taken to rescue him, with his grandfather Rohi Singh claiming he had been “pulled out using strings.”

He added: “Why was he taken to the hospital when he is no more?”

The disused well was dug by the child's family in 1984, but had not been used since 1991.

Paying tribute to the boy, Chief Minister of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh tweeted: “Very sad to hear about the tragic death of young Fatehveer.

“I pray that Waheguru grants his family the strength to bear this huge loss.

“Have sought reports from all DCs regarding any open borewell so that such terrible accidents can be prevented in the future.”

He added that he has asked officials to ensure “no such open borewell exists in any of the districts” and encouraged locals to search their area for them.
