Blazing saddles: horses ride through flames to honour a saint

Like a scene from a disaster movie, a rider guides his horse through a terrifying barrier of flame.

But the scene happens every year, when the people of San Bartolome de Pinares in Spain honour St Anthony - the patron saint of domestic animals - by riding their horses, donkeys and mules through burning branches.

The ceremony - called the Luminarias - has been going on for 500 years and is believed to purify the animals and protect them against illness.
