US police were in a three-hour stand-off with an axe-wielding man who turned up at a radio station demanding DJs played Insane Clown Posse song My Axe.

The 38-year-old man arrived at Boston's Kiss 108 radio station on Monday and failed to get the song played on the airwaves despite holding the weapon.

Police rushed to the station’s car park where the man had barricaded himself inside his car.

The suspect hurled “sharp-edged weapons” out the windows at officers who attempted to stop him using a stun gun.

He eventually handed himself in around 4.30pm.

Local news channel WBZ-TV said he had minor self-inflicted cuts on his arms.

Police say he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
