An Australian couple has discovered a novel way to meet up with neighbours and enjoy the good weather, despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Linda and Les Solomons, from New South Wales, converted their garden fence so it can fold down and become a table - allowing them to share a drink with their longstanding neighbours Jackie and Tony Cliffe while keeping to social distancing rules.

The Solomons' son-in-law Matt, who runs a local fencing company, helped them with the conversion.

He told the Standard: "They decided to modify the fence as they were finding self isolation challenging like many other people.

"They thought it was a great way to continue socialising whilst practising social distancing in the comfort of their yards.

Matt added that the Solomons and the Cliffes have been neighbours and friends for over 30 years, so they have missed meeting up during the lockdown.

He went on: "They have always had regular catch ups but now quick or long catch ups are so easy.

"It means they can catch up most days, which is so important for their health and well-being when being confined to their homes most of the time."

The couple's daughter Emma said that the new fencing has helped the Solomons deal with lockdown more easily.

She told Yahoo Australia: “Even once everything settles down they plan to continue to use it. Their grandkids will love being able to be passed over the fence to go and have a play.”
