Adam Sandler has proved he can still drive a golf shot as he channelled his Happy Gilmore character to mark the 25th anniversary of the comedy classic.

The Uncut Gems star posted a video of himself taking the shot on Twitter, telling the camera: “OK, it’s been 25 years since I’ve done this... let’s see what happens.”

He takes a running start, as per the 1996 film, unleashing a crisp drive for a huge hit off the tee.

After taking the shot, the actor says to the camera: "And I am not lying to you: that is smashed. Smashed. That went pretty well."

Sandler closes his video with "You’re dead, Shooter” - a reference to Shooter McGavin, the arrogant pro who becomes Happy’s enemy in the much-loved comedy.

Ben Stiller, who played the nefarious nursing home owner who abuses Happy’s grandmother, replied in character: “That’s a beautiful swing Mr Gilmore. Congrats on your anniversary, and being such a loving grandson.

“So happy to be a small part of taking good care of her during her ‘golden years.’”

In the film, Sandler plays a frustrated hockey player who realises he can channel his aggression into golf, shaking up the conventions of a PGA tour to earn money to buy his grandmother’s house.

Twitter profile for TopGolf revealed that one of their rules - “No running starts” - was inspired by the film.

Sandler was the ninth highest-paid actor last year, earning £31.3 million, according to Forbes. He narrowly missed out on academy awards for his portrayal of a gem dealer Howard Ratner in Uncut Gems.
