Property developers using heavy machinery have torn down a 4,000-year-old pyramid at historically important ruins near Peru’s capital Lima.

Two firms, which now face a criminal trial, allegedly tried to destroy three more but were stopped by witnesses.

The destruction occurred last weekend at El Paraiso, which was a religious and administrative centre long before the rise of the Inca culture encountered by Spanish conquerors.

Site excavation director Marco Guilen said that the people involved in tearing down the 20ft-tall pyramid, which

was one of 12, “have committed irreparable damage to a page of Peruvian history”.
