Fourteen children fell ill at an primary school after eating gummy bears which are thought to have contained marijuana.

Nine of the children, aged between five and nine, were taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital by emergency services after a teacher found the bag of sweets in a classroom.

The sweets were found at Anton Grdina Elementary School in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday.

The children suffered from "upset stomachs but no other signs of impairment," according to a police report.

It added that only one of the children tested positive for THC, the mind-altering chemical found in marijuana.

The mother of the nine-year-old child thought to have taken the bag of sweets into school was arrested on suspicion of endangering children, according to CNN.

The bears have been sent for testing to determine whether they contained marijuana.

Principal Latosha Glass told News 5 Cleveland: “As a precaution today, we called EMS to examine several students to determine whether gummy bears shared with them by other students during lunch may have been marijuana-laced.

“This precaution was taken because the packaging of the candy was not recognizable to us and appeared suspicious.

“The students involved were examined by medical staff and their parents were called. Although most of our students were not involved in this incident, and although we have not yet received a report on the candy itself, I am taking time to remind all parents and caregivers of the importance of keeping medicines and other items that may be harmful to children locked up.

“Thank you for the opportunity to use the incident today as a teachable moment for our school community of our shared responsibility to keep our students safe.”
