A missing plane carrying two people has been found crashed near a Scottish village.

Emergency services were alerted this afternoon when the light aircraft did not land in its scheduled slot at Dundee airport.

It was due to land around noon but communication became lost around four miles west of the hub, Police Scotland said.

Coastguard teams and the RAF were searching for the plane and it was located close to the village of Abernyte, Perthshire.

No information has been released on the condition of the two passengers.

A police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that following loss of contact with a light aircraft, believed to be carrying two people, due to land at Dundee airport at around midday today an aircraft has been located near to the village of Abernyte in Perthshire.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene."

The plane is thought to have been travelling from Inverness to Dundee, which is a base for light aircraft.
