A workman plummeted four storeys to his death in a horror accident that saw his digger tip off the edge of a derelict Cadbury's factory.

Contactor Euro Dismantling Solutions Ltd was last week handed an £80,000 fine for failing to ensure James Stacey's safety, while site supervisor Paul Priestley, 54, was given a suspended jail sentence after being convicted of failing to take reasonable care.

Dad-of-one Mr Stacey, 31, died while demolishing the factory in Keynsham, near Bristol, in November 2011.

Bristol Crown Court heard he had been dropping part of a massive fibreglass tank off the edge of the fourth floor into a "drop zone". At the last minute, Mr Stacey could not wrestle his digger free from the tank, and he was pulled with it over the edge to his death.

"The opening was not properly protected to prevent the machine falling from the building," said a Health and Safety Executive spokesman. "The tank got stuck on the digger and pulled the vehicle with it. Mr Stacey died from his injuries."

The Barry and District News reported friends and family had called Mr Stacey "wonderful" and "loving".

His partner Hannah told the paper: "He was an amazing dad and brought happiness to so many people's lives.

"He had the most beautiful smile that would brighten up the room."

Euro Dismantling Solutions, which is now in liquidation, admitted its wrongdoing. Priestley, who had denied the charge against him, was handed a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, and a bill for £7,500 costs.
