Woman quizzed over Crete baby death

A 20-year-old British woman has been arrested on suspicion of strangling her baby after giving birth in a hotel room in Crete, local police said.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was arrested in Malia, on Crete's north coast.

Police said she was arrested on suspicion of child murder. The woman was herself taken to hospital for treatment.

It is understood police were called after locals rushed the woman, who was bleeding heavily, to hospital.

Police reportedly found the dead child in the hotel room with sheets around its neck and covering its face.

The woman is believed to have been in Crete on holiday with her sister and a female friend.
