A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a three-year-old girl drowned in a hotel swimming pool.

The child, who was on holiday in Lancashire with her family, got into difficulty at the Dalmeny Hotel in St Annes, near Blackpool, at about 11am yesterday.

It is that thought one of her parents raised the alarm and helped staff bring the girl to the surface. She was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital and transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in a critical condition but died at about 8pm yesterday.

She was from Galashiels in Scotland. Police said that a 40-year-old woman from Galashiels had been arrested on suspicion of murder and child neglect.

Detective Inspector Nick Connaughton of Blackpool CID said: “This is a tragic situation where a young girl has lost her fight for life following an incident at a swimming pool in a hotel in St Annes. We are now treating this sad death as suspicious and are investigating just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool.”

A spokesman for the Dalmeny Hotel declined to comment.
