William upholds standards on visit

12 April 2012

Prince William has spoken of the importance of his first official tour on behalf of the Queen and his hopes of living up to the "standards" set by his grandmother.

The second-in-line to the throne described how deputising for the Monarch in New Zealand meant an "awful lot" to him.

But he dashed speculation the landmark visit to the South Pacific islands would herald more tours, saying he had a lot more training to do for his military career as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot.

William's comments were made as he toured the £110 million redeveloped Eden Park stadium in Auckland which will host next year's Rugby World Cup final.

The start of the three-day visit has been marked by its relaxed atmosphere and lack of formality demonstrated in the casual clothes worn by the prince.

The engagements have also followed the same theme with William spending his first day visiting two sporting events that saw him playing catch with a group of young schoolboy rugby players and sailing a yacht in waters off Auckland.

Talking briefly to the press, William said: "It's great being here, I did come about four and a half years ago - had a great time here.

"This is obviously a bit more official, although still enjoying the fact it's reasonably relaxed, and I just love seeing everyone and seeing more of New Zealand, so it's great."

Prince William also took the helm of the winning America's Cup yacht during the trip, under the eye of skipper Dean Barker. Later he attended a hangi, or traditional Maori feast cooked over hot stones in a pit in the ground, at Government House in Auckland.

On Monday, in the capital, Wellington, he is scheduled to open the Supreme Court building, lay a wreath at the National War Memorial, attend a barbecue hosted by Prime Minister John Key and visit a nature reserve. He is due to visit the Wellington Children's Hospital on Tuesday before flying to Australia.
