BBC presenters have changed into black suits as they host rolling coverage of health concerns for the Queen. Presenter Huw Edwards sparked concern after he changed into a black suit with a black tie.

Sports broadcaster Gary Lineker said: “The fact Huw Edwards is in the studio and wearing a black tie doesn’t bode well.”

The BBC has also changed its background website colour from red to black as the website provides constant updates on the situation.

The queen is Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign, reigning for 70 years, and has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace has described “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.

“Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace said in a statement.

“The queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

A spokesperson said Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, in Britain for a number of events, would also travel to Scotland.

“My prayers, and the prayers of people across the @churchofengland and the nation, are with Her Majesty The Queen today,” Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said on Twitter.

Why are BBC presenters wearing black?

It is said that presenters for the national broadcaster always have a set of black clothes on standby for the announcement of any high-profile deaths.

Colleagues, reporters and guests will also follow suit and wear black clothing from then on.

Similarly, Martine Croxall announced Prince Phillip’s death in April 2021, wearing a black robe instead of the brown top she was previously wearing.
