Weather hots up for holiday weekend

12 April 2012

It may be a Bank Holiday weekend but there are signs that summer could be on its way with forecasters predicting the hottest weather of the year.

Temperatures could hit 23C in parts of the country and are likely to stay above 20C for the next few days.

The highest temperature recorded so far this year was 22C in Weybourne, Norfolk on April 26.

After temperatures of between 16C and 20C generally around the country on Saturday, conditions are set to warm up by a few degrees.

Temperatures, especially in the South East, will be around 22C with some areas reaching 23C, according to forecasters. The average temperature in the South East in May is 17C.

But some areas of the UK are expected to experience a more traditionally damp Bank Holiday weekend. While South East England and East Anglia will remain dry, people in the North and West face heavy showers and possible thunderstorms along with the warmth.

Millions of people embarked on a Bank Holiday getaway with up to 18 million vehicles expected to hit the roads over the weekend.

Although the risk of showers and thunderstorms will persist, traffic congestion is likely to be a bigger problem for drivers than weather conditions on Monday night and Tuesday morning when the AA predicts that roads will be busier than normal as people return.

Meanwhile, those hoping to avoid the roads by using trains will need to be aware that more than 40 engineering schemes are taking place on the railways over the weekend. Two of the rail engineering spots are in areas where work overran at the new year - on the West Coast Main Line (WCML) in the Midlands and at Liverpool Street station in London.

On the roads, the RAC predicted congestion hotspots around out-of-town DIY stores, with 86% of homeowners planning to visit home improvement stores at some time over the long weekend.
