UK weather forecast: Remnants of tropical Storm Edouard to batter Britain before 25C heatwave

Britain will start to feel like summer again at the weekend - but not before more downpours

Britain will be lashed with more downpours for the rest of this week before the country enjoys a renewed heatwave, forecasters say.

The country will start to feel like summer again come the weekend, with highs of 25C in London.

But the warm spell will follow up to 30mm of rain, with some parts of Wales and the Midlands at risk of flooding on Thursday and Friday as the remnants of Storm Edouard in the US move in.

The tropical cyclone, which has battered Florida, is racing across the Atlantic Ocean - and looks set to deluge Brits trying to enjoy their newfound pub freedoms and staycations.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told the Standard: “The next 24 hours or so will be a bit wet across parts of the UK, especially Wales, the Midlands and northern England. For southern areas it’s a bit more on and off rain.

“Tomorrow is going to be another fairly cloudy and damp day across many parts of England and Wales, but brighter further north. On Friday we’re going to have some quite heavy showers across eastern parts with some thunder.

“Then as we go into the weekend, high pressure builds in just in time. Saturday and Sunday looks like it will be fairly dry and bright with sunshine, and temperatures will respond to that sunshine.

“We may well get up to 25C in the London area, but in general low 20s in other parts of England and Wales.

"Certainly it will be warmer than July so far and there’s hints that the high pressure may hang around to give us a more prolonged settled spell of sunshine next week.

“It generally looks like as we go into next week, there is increasingly a chance of largely fine and settled weather in the mid-20s, but it’s still too early to know for sure.”

Mr Snell said the Met Office is “keeping a close eye on the heavy showers Friday”, with 10-20mm set to soak especially Wales, bringing with it a localised flooding risk.

However, the Environment Agency has not yet issued any flood alerts.

Met Office weather maps also show widespread cloud cover tonight and tomorrow, with blue skies starting to break through late on Friday and temperatures steadily increasing from the mid-teens to the 20C mark by Sunday afternoon.

The 40mph gales of earlier this week will reduce, with south-east England seeing the strongest winds, at 20mph.

The beer garden weather will be good news for the struggling hospitality sector, whose grand first weekend open from lockdown in 104 days was dampened with widespread downpours and chilly air.
