'Wanted man' fires at police patrol

12 April 2012

A huge manhunt is under way after a suspected wanted man shot at a police patrol near a busy railway station.

Two police officers were hurt when a man pulled out a gun and fired at them near Waterloo railway station, central London.

One of the officers may have narrowly escaped serious injury when he suffered a small cut to his leg, but it is not clear whether the wound was caused by a bullet.

The shooting took place in The Cut, a street packed with shops and bars that runs between Waterloo and Southwark Tube station.

It is understood the patrolling officers saw a suspected wanted man and chased him when he refused to stop.

The suspect then produced a gun from inside his clothing and fired at least one shot at the pursuing officers.

Local colleagues and members of Scotland Yard's specialist armed CO19 unit went to the scene when they called for emergency assistance on their radios. Several streets were closed and office workers were told to remain indoors and stay away from windows as police began to hunt for the man.

Part of Blackfriars Road and The Cut were closed as emergency service vehicles gathered at the junction of The Cut and Union Street.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 3.02pm to reports of shots fired at officers at The Cut, SE1. Local officers and firearms officers attended.

"A male officer has sustained a cut to his leg. We do not know how the injury has been sustained at this stage. He has been taken to a south London hospital as a precaution. No arrests have been made. Inquiries continue."
