Mobile phone users across the UK were hit by connection issues on Tuesday night, as customers of at least three different networks reported problems making calls.

At around 5pm, people started complaining to Vodafone, O2 and EE that they were experiencing some sort of phone outage.

Thousands of users said they were unable to ring anyone, with their calls disconnected.

Vodafone told the BBC that the problem had been caused by an update it had made to block telephone numbers used for spam calls.

The provider acknowledged this had “impacted "a large number of customers", as Twitter users complained of being unable to make or receive calls.

O2 confirmed that their users were having problems owing to Vodafone’s network going down, the Sun reported.

Meanwhile, EE said it had “no known network issues” but some customers might be experiencing problems owing to Vodafone's blackout.

A spokeswoman for Vodafone told the BBC a fix had been made at 6.10pm and that its operations had "started recovering" shortly afterwards.

She added that not all of their users had been affected, but another spokesperson conceded that the issue had been “particularly inconvenient, especially in a lockdown situation.”
