The Duchess of Cornwall went back to school today - and exchanged a "high five" with one of the students.

She was visiting the BRIT School in Croydon when music student Jonty Ryder, 17, decided to welcome her in a less than formal style as she toured the canteen.

Jonty, who recorded his meeting with Camilla on his iPhone, told the Standard he was surprised that she decided to play ball.

He said: "I said: 'Can I have a high five?' for a fair few times. It was a brilliant experience."

Camilla was shown how the school, where Adele, Jessie J and Leona Lewis were students, taught more than just music.

She watched a community arts choir made up of students and women pensioners from Age UK sing the Beatles song With A Little Help From My Friends. Camilla, 65, said that Prince Charles was patron of Age UK and told them: "I think I should probably be joining you."

When she visited a mock studio with students practising how to work in TV, she grabbed the controls of a TV camera and pretended to operate it. Last year she and Charles read the weather forecast on a visit to BBC Scotland.

The school was set up by the British Record Industry Trust (Brit) 21 years ago and gets a large part of its income from the Brit awards and Classical Brit awards, which Camilla has attended.

More than 10,000 students have passed through its doors, taking nine different courses including music, dance and musical theatre.

For entry this September there has been more than 2,350 applications for 600 places.

Dance student Briony Scarlett, 18, from East Grinstead, helped show Camilla round the school.

She was one of a number of Brit students who were enlisted to star in the Olympics opening ceremony, and featured in the section starring Dizzee Rascal.

"I could tell that she was genuinely interested in the school and what we have to offer,"Briony said. "She was interested in each individual person and their story.

"I think she was taken back by it all. She loved the atmosphere and she loved how involved we are with the community."
