Glampers who died after being hit by 4x4 are named

A vet today described how she fought in vain to save the lives of two glampers hit by a 4x4 as they walked on an unlit country lane to their campsite.

The men, named today by police as Matthew Lind, 31, from Wimbledon, and James Morden, 31, from Tunbridge Wells, died following the crash on the single-track road in Ringmer, near Lewes.

Two women, aged 27 and 29, were also injured in the accident at 8pm on Saturday. Three other people in the group escaped unhurt.

Rose Cusack and her husband Phil, also a vet, gave CPR to the victims at the roadside after their friends knocked on the door of their home.

Mrs Cusack said: “My husband and I are vets and obviously have medical knowledge so tried to help. We tried to save them but it was obvious the injuries were very bad.

“We’re used to being called to medical emergencies as vets, but nothing like this. It was quite a dark evening, the bodies were lying on the roadside, it was awful.”

The driver of the 4x4, a 31-year-old woman from Uckfield, was uninjured. She has not been arrested. Inquests into the deaths are due to be opened in Eastbourne next week.
