Ukip's Godfrey Bloom calls disabled student Richard III at Oxford University immigration debate

Ex Ukip MEP Godfrey Bloom called a disabled student “Richard the Third" during an immigration debate at Oxford University.

Mr Bloom, 64, made the remark which referenced the deformed king against second year law student David Browne at a debate on the motion that “Post-war Britain has seen too much immigration."

Mr Bloom supported the motion as student David Browne began a speech against it, Mr Bloom got to his feet and mocked the student, saying: “ Point of order, are you Richard III or not?”

Mr Browne responds by quoting Thatcher to enthusiastic applause from the audience.

He told the debating hall: “I always cheer up immensely if someone attacks one personally, as it means they have run out of arguments.”

The incident was captured on video and posted online by the Oxford Union debating society.

Richard III, who ruled England from June 1483 until he died during the battle of Bosworth Field in August 1485, is believed to have been a hunchback.

Bloom, who quit the UKIP group in Europe last year after joking that party activists were “sluts”, later claimed his comments were “ basic common sense and non-controversial.”

After stepping down from UKIP in Europe, Bloom said he would stay in the European Parliament as an independent MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and remain a UKIP member.
