The UK is set for a battering from grim weather as a powerful jet stream moves across the Atlantic.

It comes as storm Leslie makes its way across the ocean. The Met Office is currently monitoring its progress. Forecasters say they are "keeping a close eye" on it.

Storm Leslie could have the effect of sending a powerful jet stream blast to the UK, bringing with it high winds and plummeting temperatures, forecasters have said.

“The jet stream is currently meandering towards us. It’s not unusual, but the strength of its influence… can be quite vigorous," a forecaster told the Independent.

“Wind and rain is on the way,” warned Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern.

“The further northwest you are the windier and wetter it’s likely to be. The further southeast you are the warmer and drier it will be, occasionally. We’re all likely to have some unsettled weather, at times.”

Parts of the UK are set for frost tomorrow, into Sunday there will be heavy rain and gales in north west Scotland with England and Wales bright but chilly.

High winds and heavy rain are forecast in the north next week until Wednesday with "very warm" temperatures towards the middle of next week.
