UK weather forecast: rain and thunder to disrupt heatwave... but soaring highs of 31C to return this weekend

Ella Wills4 July 2018

Thundery showers are set to disrupt a UK heatwave in London and the south, forecasters have warned.

Parts of the south-west and south-east of England will see a shift in conditions on Wednesday and Thursday following non-stop sunshine across the country.

And Londoners could expect some heavy outbursts of rain this afternoon, the Met Office told the Standard.

But the good weather is set to last as the mercury should rise to more than 30C throughout the weekend.

Met Office meteorologist Sarah Kent said that high temperatures are set to remain in London from Wednesday, with highs of 27C predicted today in the capital.

The mercury will then rise to between 29C and 31C between Thursday and Sunday.

"It's going to remain very warm, if not hot, for many places in the south east," she said.

But the forecaster warned that the heat could trigger some summer showers in parts.

Ms Kent said: "It's a little bit of a change for the southern areas today.

"The south-west will have some scattered showers during the day, and there will be showers in London from mid-morning with the chance of some heavy showers during the afternoon.

She added: "The heat is triggering these showers."

Ms Kent said tomorrow will see "some cloud with sunny spells in the south".

She added: "It will be another warm day with some thundery showers in Devon, Cornwall, Kent and London in the afternoon. But they will be hit and miss."

It comes as the mercury will rise as high as 30C in London on Thursday, and 31C on Saturday and Sunday.

The UK is currently enjoying a sizzling heatwave with highs of 32.1C seen last Friday and highs of 30C seen on Saturday.

It follows one of the UK's hottest and driest Junes ever, and the weather is not changing any time soon.

The rest of the country - bar Scotland - will see little rain and continue to enjoy in glorious sunshine and warm temperatures over the weekend, Ms Kent said.

Parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland, are on a hosepipe ban with companies urging people to think about the water they are using.

Water companies have asked customers to conserve supplies by not using hosepipes or water sprinklers as the heatwave continues.
