UK weather forecast latest: Snow to hit Britain this weekend as temperatures plummet

Olivia Tobin13 December 2018

Parts of the UK could be hit by up to 20cm worth of snow this weekend with the mercury expected to plummet.

A low pressure weather system is developing in the Atlantic and is expected to clash with cold air across Britain.

With temperatures set to get much colder on Friday and Saturday, snow could fall across a swathe of Scotland and northern England.

Friday will start off “mostly dry, bright and cold” but temperatures will change overnight, the Met Office said.

Forecaster Simon Partridge said hilly parts of Scotland could see “10 to 20cm” worth of snow, while parts of the North East are expected to be hit as well.

He said: “Over the next few days, most parts of the UK will be fairly dry, but will turn increasingly cold as we approach the weekend.”

As well as areas in the north and Scotland seeing snow, Mr Partridge added most parts of the UK “will see frost”.

On Friday, in areas like Edinburgh and Glasgow it will be as cold as 2C or 3C through the day – but could drop to -2C or -4C in the evening.

Mr Partridge said south west England will be comparably much hotter – at about 13C.

There is no snow expected in London either.

Mr Partridge said the capital should be “dry and cold for most of the day”, but will see sunny spells.
