Rain, snow, ice and storm-force winds will batter parts of Britain this week, forecasters say.

The coming days will see more rain and some chillier nights while ice is set to strike swathes of Scotland, bringing a risk of injury on the roads, the Met Office warned.

"It's pretty mild in the south today and colder further north with lots of showery rain, with some of it falling as sleet or snow on higher ground," meterologist Alex Burkill told the Standard.

Tonight, areas in the south will stay mild with the mercury remaining in the double figures up to 12 or 13C and as high as 10C in London.

But in large parts of Scotland and Ireland, clear skies and calm conditions will see temperatures plummet below freezing.

The mercury could sink as low as -4C in some parts of Scotland, creating a "massive contrast" of temperatures across the UK, said Burkill.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice in central and southern Scotland from 3am to 10am Monday, warning of difficult driving conditions during the morning rush hour.

The same day will see heavy showers across much of England and Wales, while parts of the north could be whipped by lashings of snow.

"On Monday night going into Tuesday, there will be clear skies and a drop-off in winds so it will widely be a chilly night.

"The greatest chance of snow will be Tuesday, when a band of rain will hit colder air coming up from the south-west," said Burkill.

In the north in the highest points such as the Pennines, as much as 10-12cm could fall, he said - although lower areas will see "no problems".

Wednesday will bring warmer temperatures accompanied by heavy rain, but that will give way to the "most unsettled" weather on Thursday moving into Friday when storm-force winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain will lash the north.

The latest forecast from the Met Office comes after people in the south braced for bursts of heavy rain and windy weather over the weekend.

Torrential rain and gales of up to 80mph battered the UK earlier this week as Storm Diana sparked travel disruption and flooding in parts of the country.
