Brits are set to bask in glorious sunshine this week despite a dip in temperatures following the weekend's sizzling heat.

Although the mercury has dropped dramatically since the scorching highs of Saturday - when temperatures reached 34C in London - sun-worshippers will still have a chance to top up their tans.

“We’ve still got plenty more sun to come,” Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey told the Standard.

“But we’re not looking at the higher temperatures.

“For the majority of the country it’s a fine, dry, sunny week.”

Monday will see a peak of around 23C, with the mercury likely to creep up to around 26C in the south of England on Thursday.

Temperatures are harder to predict later in the week due to a band of low-pressure coming in from the north.

This could cause lower temperatures, though it is not clear how quickly it will move over the country.

If it moves more slowly, the south of England could see readings in the high 20s by the end of the week. If it moves more swiftly the heat will be less intense.

Although it will be dry for most of the UK, the north west of Scotland will see some rain, which will be at its heaviest on Wednesday and Thursday.

The wet weather unlikely to push further south than that and when it does it will do so in the form of patchy showers.

Overnight, temperatures are also going to be cooler, providing some respite for those who have struggled to sleep in the stifling heat of late.

“There are going to be single figure, cooler nights. Some people will welcome that,” said Ms Maxey.

The slight cool off comes after a record temperature for 2019 was set on Saturday, with the mercury reaching 34C at Heathrow and elsewhere in west London.

This was just short of the 35.6C June record set in 1976.

Meanwhile, several European countries reported record temperatures last week, including France which hit an all-time heat record of 44.9C on Friday.
