UK increases Sumatra earthquake aid

12 April 2012

The UK Government has added £2 million to its aid package for survivors of the earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The extra help brings Britain's support for the stricken area to a total of £3 million.

Some £500,000 has already been given to the Red Cross in Sumatra and a further £500,000 has been given in kind by the deployment of a 63-strong UK Search and Rescue team and donations of emergency shelters and two million water purification tablets.

The additional money will provide first aid, shelter, drinking water and emergency latrines to families in the Padang area.

As part of the announcement, International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said the Department for International Development (DFID) had agreed that the World Bank can reallocate 1.1 million dollars (around £680,000) to help rebuild damaged infrastructure in the earthquake-stricken areas.

The money will be redistributed from an existing project, following requests from local officials.

The aid for Sumatra comes on top of £500,000 sent to the Philippines after Typhoon Ketsana left at least 250 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless and £100,000 given to the Red Cross to help Samoa after a tsunami.

Mr Alexander said: "Natural disasters have a devastating impact wherever they strike but nowhere more so than in the developing world. It is right that we should play our part in the relief and recovery efforts in Indonesia and the Philippines. Britain stands ready to support those in need in times of crisis through Government funding but also through the generosity of our individual citizens."

The announcement came as the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) thanked people for offering unwanted goods to its appeals but said money was more useful.

The charity, a fundraising umbrella body of 13 major UK aid agencies, said it believes people feel more able to offer clothes, toys and other items instead of money during the recession.
