A group of walkers had been “glamping” when they were hit by a 4x4 in a quiet country lane.

Two men — one from south-west London — died and two women, aged 27 and 29, were injured in the accident at 8pm on Saturday in Sussex.

The Nissan Pathfinder ploughed into the group on an unlit country road outside Ringmer, near Lewes.

The women were treated for minor injuries at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Sussex Police said two of the pedestrians, a man from Wimbledon and a man from Tunbridge Wells, both aged 31, died at the scene.

The two injured women were from Wimbledon and Addlestone in Surrey. Three other pedestrians in the group, a 29-year-old man from Addlestone, a 24-year-old woman from Morden and a 31-year-old woman from Sutton, were unhurt. The group are understood to have been staying at the nearby Ember’s Camping, on the Bentley Farm estate.

Ember’s offers an upmarket camping experience next to the Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum, which covers 90 acres including the wildfowl reserve, living willow tunnels, woods adventure playground and motor museum.

The camping site boasts fire pits, underfloor heated shower blocks and a miniature railway.

The Nissan driver, a 31-year-old woman from Uckfield, was uninjured. She was not arrested.

Sergeant Huw Watts, of the Surrey and Sussex Road Policing Unit, appealed for witnesses to contact collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting Operation Greenwich. He said: “If anyone has any dashcam footage or CCTV, relating to this incident, we would be particularly interested to hear from them.”

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark O’Brien said: “This is clearly a terrible time for the families and friends of those who have lost their lives. We do not know precisely what happened — the exact circumstances are being investigated.

“We would urge that everyone takes extra care and looks out for each other when on our roads.”

Two people were killed in a second crash in Sussex when a Ford Ranger was in collision with a Mini Countryman on the A267 near Heathfield. The driver, a 55-year-old man, and a 48-year-old woman died at the scene. The Mini’s driver, an 18-year-old man from Heathfield, was seriously injured.
