Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a blaze ripped through stock at a huge Amazon warehouse.

Night workers were evacuated from the depot in the west Midlands following reports of a fire at 2.10am on Sunday.

The deliberate fire spread over the first and second floors of the 700,000 sq ft depot in Rugeley, Staffordhire, damaging some racking and clothing stock.

A spokesman for the company said there had been a “small fire“ at the warehouse which was quickly extinguished.

In a statement, Staffordshire Police said investigations had revealed that the fire had been started deliberately.

The force said that it had yesterday arrested a 19-year-old man from Birmingham on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and bailed him until next year.

A second man, 21, from Wednesbury, west Midlands, was detained this morning on suspicion of the same offence and remains in custody.

A spokesman for the force said: "An investigation is on-going and officers are keeping Amazon management updated on developments."

Anyone with information about the fire who has not already spoken to police is being urged to contact officers by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
