Two dead as aircraft crashes

Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed near Andover, Hampshire Police said
12 April 2012

Investigators are examining the wreckage of a plane crash in which two people were killed.

A Hampshire Police spokesman said: "It is too early to say whether ash was a factor but it will form part of the investigation."

Inspector Paul Newstead, of Hampshire Police, said he believed it was "highly unlikely" that ash was a factor in the accident where a plane crashed into a field near Monxton in Hampshire .

He said: "It will form part of the investigation but we do think it's highly unlikely, but we cannot rule anything out at this stage."

The plane had come down in an agricultural field without causing any damage to power cables or other structures and away from houses or farm buildings.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesman said: "The AAIB has sent investigators to the scene."

The AAIB also said the crash was not believed to be linked to the volcanic ash cloud drifting over Britain.

A spokesman said: "From what we know of the accident so far, there's no reason to connect it to the atmospheric conditions from the volcano."

Jim Dennison, whose house in Weyhill is closest to the crash scene, said he saw a microlight fly over but did not realise there had been an accident.

He said: "We saw a blue microlight which went over and then we saw a helicopter flying around but we didn't know anything had happened until later. It's such a shame."
