Trumpeter serenades lockdown Yorkshire with emotional rendition of Moon River to mark pink supermoon

Ellena Cruse8 April 2020

A trumpeter serenaded the streets of Yorkshire with an emotional rendition of Moon River to mark a lunar event during the coronavirus lockdown.

The musician played the tune - made popular in the Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast at Tiffany’s - in Hebden Bridge for last night's pink supermoon.

The celestial event is a northern Native American reference to an early-blooming wildflower, which starts to pop up in the US and Canada at the beginning of spring.

The song has been covered numerous times over the years, but the latest play lightened up residents' evenings who were staying at home to stop the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

The footage opens with a wide-angle shot showing dots of light from houses in the town.

In the background, the brassy melody of Henry Mancini’s tune can be heard playing.

The camera then pans to a shot of the moon shining brightly in the night sky overlooking the lit-up homes.

When the trumpeter finishes their rendition, claps and cheers erupt from the town.

People can also be heard calling out “Thank you”.

Posting the clip to Twitter, John McMahon said: “Very moving - doing the washing up before bed, I realised I could hear a lone trumpeter in the cool spring night.

“We ran upstairs to catch their #MoonRiver serenade to April’s #PinkMoon.

“Greatly appreciated by the whole street.”

Other social media users also appreciated the gesture and thanked the musician.

One user said: “It was one of my dear dad's favourite tunes - he loved all Henry Mancini's music but especially that one. And there's something very poignant about a lone trumpet.”

Another added: “Tears rolled down my cheeks as that hauntingly beautiful lone trumpet played my mother’s favourite song.

"I closed my eyes & was able to see her dancing w/my dad in our basement while Andy Williams' Greatest Hits went round & round on the Zenith console.Thank you."

One user said: “So nostalgic - beautiful.”

Another said: "This is utterly beautiful! I was going through several tweets, played this vid without reading and just expected this to be a cute moon short clip and ended up being moved to tears when listening to one of my favourite songs of all times. Thanks for sharing, you, lovely ones!"
