Travel delays after train hits body

12 April 2012

Passengers on a busy commuter rail route saw their travel plans thrown into chaos after a body was hit by a train at a level crossing.

British Transport Police were attending the scene at Lolham Crossing, 10 miles north of Peterborough, after receiving an emergency call from a train driver, a spokesman for the force said.

The incident caused delays on the east coast main line at Peterborough, which primarily serves travellers between Kings Cross, London, and Edinburgh.

A BTP spokesman said: "We have no details to release at this stage. We spoke to a driver who reported hitting a body and officers were attending the scene."

Commuter Craig Woodhouse was left stranded at Retford station as he travelled from Doncaster to London.

He said: "We'd been here 45 minutes without any sign of movement."
