Toyota production slumps in Japan

Toyota said car production in Japan was down more than sixty per cent in March
12 April 2012

Toyota said its car production in Japan plummeted 62.7% in March due to a parts supply crunch following the earthquake and tsunami.

Toyota, the world's top-selling carmaker last year, said its domestic production in March was 129,491 vehicles.

Toyota's global production dropped 29.9% year-on-year to 542,465 vehicles for the month.

The magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11 destroyed many factories in north eastern Japan, causing severe parts shortages for Toyota and other carmakers.

The supply crunch forced Toyota to suspend production in Japan, resulting in a production loss of 260,000 cars so far.
