The British gap year traveller thrown in a Malaysian prison for stripping naked on top of a sacred mountain has said she is "truly sorry" for the offence she and her friends caused.

Eleanor Hawkins, 23, arrived back in the UK on Saturday after being sentenced to three days in prison and fined 5,000 Malaysian ringgit (roughly £859) by a Malaysian court.

She and three other backpackers were arrested last week after a group of them posed naked atop the 13,400ft Mount Kinabalu - an act locals said caused an earthquake that killed 18 people.

Speaking outside her home on Sunday, Miss Hawkins said: "I just want to say how relieved and happy I am to finally be home.

"I know my behaviour was foolish and know how much offence we all caused to the local people of Sabah.

"For that I am truly sorry."

A recent graduate with a masters degree from Southampton University, Miss Hawkins had been in the middle of a gap year travelling around south-east Asia.

Her mother, Ruth Hawkins, told reporters outside the family's Derby home the experience had been "traumatic" for her daughter but that the judgment reached by Malaysian authorities was appropriate and fair.

"We are, as you can probably appreciate, really relieved to finally have Ellie home after what has been a traumatic time for her," she said.

"Ellie knows what she did was wrong and disrespectful and she is deeply sorry for any offence caused to the people of Sabah.

"Ellie has been appropriately and fairly judged by the Malaysian authorities and has served her sentence in full - the case is now closed.

"We would all now like Eleanor to be given the chance to recover, so would really appreciate it if you would now afford us some privacy."
