Tom Hanks has lifted the lid on Her Majesty’s favourite tipple.

The Hollywood star, 65, revealed he had discovered the Queen’s drink of choice is a martini after he sat next to her at a dinner.

A-lister Hanks said he had prepared in advance for his “chit chat” with the monarch and had wanted to discuss things that were “of importance but not presumptuous”,

During an appearance on The One Show ahead of the jubilee, he said: “The chit chat with The Queen is something that you’ve got to get ready for.

“But it wasn’t in a water glass. It was a clear liquid and so I dared to ask the Queen, “and what is Your Majesty’s cocktail of choice?‘ to which she said, “ooh, martini!”.’

He added: “She had the one, that’s what she nursed throughout the course of the night, and I think, well, she’s had a wonderful reign so maybe if I were to polish up my game a bit I’ll start to drink martinis.”

Elsewhere on the show, he revealed he is a fan of BBC’s wildlife programme Springwatch.

During an interview, Packham and Strachan appeared to plug their new series to which Hanks responded: “Can we just say how great the BBC is? You’re not going to get that live every night in the United States... This is just something else”.

Hanks stars in a new science fiction film Finch.
