Tom Daley is believed to be dating an Oscar-winning Hollywood screenwriter and gay activist 20 years older than him.
The 19-year-old diver is said to be in a serious relationship with Dustin Lance Black, 39, who won an Oscar for the film Milk, which was based on the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California.
As the news spread on Twitter, Black, who had just returned to LA following a trip to Russia, joked in a tweet this morning: “Slept all day today after my trip to Russia. Did I miss anything?”
The pair are said to have been introduced by friends at the Soho Hotel in London earlier this year. Daley has reportedly made a number of trips to California, where Black lives in the LA area.
On Monday Daley, who won bronze at the 2012 Olympics, announced in a video on YouTube that he was dating a man. A source close to Daley said: “He’s besotted with Dustin. They love each other and aren’t concerned what anyone says about age difference. Dustin is very proud of Tom for making such a powerful statement about his sexuality. They are officially in a long-term relationship and are talking about having a future together.”
Hundreds took to Twitter this morning to congratulate the couple. Comedian Matt Lucas wrote: “Hooray for @TomDaley1994 & @DLanceBlack — a brilliant athlete with a magnificent writer. Two guys who give so much deserve great happiness.”
Last night the diver was pictured heading to dinner at Soho’s Inamo restaurant with best friend Sophie Lee and his mother Debbie.
