Three new swine flu cases confirmed

12 April 2012

Three more people in the UK have been diagnosed with swine flu, the Department of Health has said.

A total of eight people have now been confirmed with the disease.

A spokesman said: "There have been three more confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK - two in London and one in the North East. There are now eight confirmed cases in the UK - six in England and two in Scotland."

He added: "The preparations we have in place and are continuing to make will help to ensure we respond well in the event of a pandemic."

Earlier, the Government's Chief Medical Officer predicted "many more cases" of swine flu in the UK but said most people will make a good recovery.

Professor Sir Liam Donaldson said he was "concerned but not alarmed" after the World Health Organisation raised the alert level to phase five of six.

Sir Liam said: "Most people who get flu, even a new strain of flu, will make a good recovery. It's a nasty illness but it's short and they will recover."

He added: "To put things in proportion, in any flu - even the seasonal flu - there are some deaths, often of elderly people and the very frail. What we will see is many more cases, but on the whole most people make a good recovery from flu."
