Three more quizzed on lagoon murder

12 April 2012

Police investigating the murder of a man whose headless body was found in a lake have arrested a further three people.

The decapitated body of 26-year-old Michael Gilbert was found in the Blue Lagoon, in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, on Sunday afternoon.

Two men, aged 22 and 24, were arrested on Wednesday and remain in custody, while two women and a man were arrested from an address in Luton on Thursday.

They are being interviewed by detectives at Dunstable Police Station.

Mr Gilbert, originally from Luton, was last known to be living in Blackburn, Lancashire, and had links to Cambridge and King's Lynn.

He is survived by his mother, sister and three brothers, who still live in Luton.

The 26-year-old's headless body was found wrapped in packaging, including a white nylon "builder's bag", and was in a wheelbarrow also found at the scene.

Police have confirmed Mr Gilbert was dead before he was decapitated but have not yet given an exact cause of death.

The Blue Lagoon, a privately-owned former clay pit, became notorious after three young children died when a car they were in plunged into the water in July 2001.

The tragedy was followed by the death of an 18-year-old in June 2005 and a 16-year-old boy in 2007 who disappeared while swimming.
