Thousands to join Baby P march

12 April 2012

Campaigners will march through the capital to demand that no other children should suffer the same fate as Baby P.

Organisers of the Justice March For Baby P will hand in petitions to 10 Downing Street while there will also be speeches and prayers in memory of the child.

The signatures mark the last batch of hundreds of petitions that supporters have sent to the Prime Minister in the weeks since the tragic case of the 17-month-old's death came to light.

Baby P, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died in a blood-spattered cot in August last year.

He had suffered more than 50 injuries at the hands of his abusive mother, 27, her 32-year-old boyfriend and their lodger, Jason Owen, 36, despite 60 contacts with the authorities in Haringey, north London, over eight months.

The Justice March For Baby P gathered pace after 11 mothers and other women from all over the UK teamed up to set up a group on social networking website Facebook.

The group launched a campaign for "urgent far-reaching changes in child protection laws and social services.

"Please let's stop this happening again and again," the group states. "In memory of this baby and all the others that are still suffering let's make the people that could have saved him accountable for their gross neglect."

One of the organisers, mother-of-four Dolly Bartlett, from Newham, east London, said: "Our group is Justice March For Baby P, but we are not forgetting babies A-Z.

"We can't help Baby P but we can help all the other babies and children."
