Sarah Greene was left disappointed after opening a 41-year-old Blue Peter time capsule to find the contents had been wrecked.

Former presenter Sarah joined forces with Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby by opening the capsule on ITV’S This Morning.

The item had originally been buried in 1981 by Sarah and group of local school children under a new BBC car park being built at its studios in White City.

It was filled with records of life in the 1980s – including booklets on clothes, dance, games, sweets and aircraft – and also a vinyl record of the Blue Peter theme tune by musician Mike Oldfield and a script from the 1981 Blue Peter episode.

However, Sarah, Philip and Holly Willoughby looked disappointed after unveiling the capsule to find everything inside had been corroded.

“Oh my God,” the presenters exclaimed as they opened the item.

“I don’t think you need to see!” Sarah added, attempting to shield the capsule from the cameras.

"I feel like a spider’s going to come out of there," another said as the trio descended into laughter.

Holly held her hand over her nose due to the stench as Phil explored the box.

The presenters went on to complain about the capsule being “whiffy”.

“It’s rust and age,” Phil reflected, with Sarah quipping: “No, that’s just me.”
