Cheap wine has caused a supermarket emergency after a month's worth of stock sold out in three days.

Aldi's £3.59 bottle of plonk, Toro Loco Tempranillo 2011, saw a massive surge in demand after beating other higher-priced wines in taste tests.

Aldi's Buying team said they had "never seen anything like it".

The wine has seen a sales uplift of 1,000 per cent.

Tony Baines, MD Buying at Aldi, said: “We are urgently buying in more stock to meet demand."

He also warned panicked customers that stocks would be replenished soon.

"We would like to reassure customers that stocks will be replenished this week. We’re working tirelessly to resume normal service – but it’s proving very difficult when the bottles are flying off shelves," he said.

The wine impressed IWSC competition judges in blind taste tests and picked up a Silver medal alongside a host of older – and far more expensive – red wines.

Described as ‘fruity, rounded and appealing with nice bright cherry fruit’, the wine hails from the Utiel-Requena region in Spain.

Mr Baines added: “The demand has been immense – it completely took us by surprise. The Spanish wine name translates as ‘Crazy Bull’ – which is rather appropriate given Brits seem to be going crazy for it."
