Supermarket Tesco is to change the layout of its stores to reflect how shoppers plan and create their meals.

Instead of grouping similar foods on the same aisle, items that frequently form part of the same dish will now be placed next to each other. For example, tinned tomatoes will be placed next to herbs, salt and spices, while common baking items eggs, sugar and flour will be grouped together.

The plans are part of a revamp of the store following the appointment of Dave Lewis as CEO last year. It will be trialled in 50 stores across the country.

Tesco would not reveal which stores would be trialling the new layout, or whether any were in London.

A spokesman for the food giant, which is headquartered in Cheshunt, said: “We know customers are often pressed for time when they’re in store so to make the shopping trip a little easier we’ll be trialling changes to the layout of some of our stores.

"These changes will help customers shop for ingredients for their favourite meals by bringing items commonly bought as part of a meal closer in our stores.”

He gave the example of olives, which were previously stocked next to canned vegetables but would now be positioned next to pickled onions and gherkins.

Only certain items would be displayed in the new arrangement, leaving others arranged more conventionally.

Although ingredients such as eggs can form the basis of a wide variety of meals, from omelettes and full English breakfasts to cakes, they will only be stocked in one location – in this case the baking aisle.
