A Portuguese tourist has died after partying at the same celebrity night-spot as footballers Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole.

The 17-year-old collapsed at London's Whisky Mist - a haunt also frequented by young royals - at about 1.20am on Monday.

He was taken to a central London hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A 37-year-old man arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs was being held at a central London police station.

Rooney, who was pictured leaving the Mayfair venue, had been at the club with Cole, one of his England team mates.

Earlier that evening, the Manchester United striker landed the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award.

Rooney is understood to have been asked - along with other guests leaving the club - whether he had seen anything untoward.

But a spokesman for the footballer said: "Wayne was at Whisky Mist last night. He was not aware of any incident taking place."

A spokesman for the club said it was co-operating with police inquiries.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that we were called at 1.20am to reports of a man collapsed at a venue in Hertford Street, W1. An ambulance attended and the 17-year-old was taken to a central London hospital where he died a short while later."
