Syrian refugee filmed being bullied in Huddersfield school 'to spend money raised on relocating'

The money raised for the 15-year-old Syrian refugee who was filmed being attacked at school will be spent on relocating him and his family, a solicitor has said.

A fundraising page for the teenager raised more than £158,000 after footage of him being attacked and threatened while at school in Huddersfield went viral.

The video’s emergence on social media last month was followed by further footage of what was said to be the boy's sister being physically abused at the same school.

After the Gofundme appeal closed on Tuesday, the family’s lawyer Tasnime Akunjee told the BBC the family would spend the money relocating in West Yorkshire.

He said the remaining funds would be given to charity or used to help other refugees.

The online appeal was one of the most widely shared and fastest growing of the year.

The fund's organiser Mohammed Tahir yesterday thanked everyone for their contributions towards the £158,089 total which he said represented a life-changing amount for the family.

Mr Tahir said: "As you can see, the donations have slowed down and I feel we are in a position where we can close the campaign.

"The donations have now been turned off and I personally would like to thank everyone who supported the cause."

John Coventry, from GoFundMe, said: "This has been one of the most widely shared and fast-growing pages of 2018 with people coming together from 50 countries in a truly inspiring show of support.

"We're now working closely with the family to get the funds directly to them."

A 16-year-old boy is due to make an appearance in a youth court over the incident

Prime Minister Theresa May has previously said the generous public response showed the "true spirit of Britain".

Footage of the boy being attacked and threatened with drowning at his school provoked a flood of sympathy after it was shared on social media.

A 16-year-old boy has been interviewed over the attack on the boy and reported for summons for an offence of assault ahead of a youth court appearance.
