Supermarket roof blows off in gale

12 April 2012

Shoppers had a lucky escape after part of a supermarket roof blew off in gales that swept across the country.

And two men were killed and another seriously injured after being hit by a wave on an oil tanker off the north of Scotland.

Emergency services were called to the Aldi supermarket, in Chester, after reports that the metal roof had come loose.

A spokesman for Cheshire Constabulary said: "The large metal roof had blown away from the main building.

"Part of it had landed on three vehicles which were parked and unattended in the car park. Thankfully there were no casualties."

Roads in the area were closed while firefighters secured the roof using ropes.

A building inspector visited the scene to establish how the incident happened.

The two men were killed on board the Fr8 Venture shortly after the oil tanker had left the Pentland Firth, near Orkney, en route to Houston, Texas, in storm force weather.

Shetland coastguard received a call from the vessel and sent a rescue helicopter which airlifted a doctor onboard.

Two of the men were found to be already dead while another was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
