Stem cell hope for blind toddler

12 April 2012

A blind boy and his parents are flying to China for stem cell therapy after his family raised more than £40,000 for the treatment and trip.

Joshua Clark, who is 22 months old, has Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) - where small or poorly developed nerves connecting to the brain can cause blindness.

Joshua will have eight sets of stem cell treatments and spend 40 days in the hospital in Hangzhou near Shanghai in China.

His parents, Anthony and Joanna, along with other family members, started raising money after Joshua was diagnosed in May last year.

Mrs Clark, 35, said: "Joshua is absolutely fantastic, he's none the wiser at the moment.

"It's very difficult, we want to stay positive and hope it will work but we are staying realistic as well as it might not do anything. At least we know we would have tried and done our best."

Speaking about the fundraising she said: "It's really quite overwhelming. It's been done in a matter of five months, which is incredible.

"This would have been impossible without the generosity of local people, family and friends."

On his return to his home in Caernarfon, North Wales, Joshua will have to spend one hour a day in an oxygen chamber for a year to help the stem cell treatment, Mrs Clark said.

The couple hope the treatment will allow Joshua to detect light, see colours and objects and be able to tell whether it is night or day.
